In any case, things appear back to normal now. Even before the recommended reboot the audio started working again. Next attempt was to uninstall and delete the driver completely from my computer and then download the latest driver from Dell. Next attempt was to uninstall and delete the driver completely from my computer and then download the latest driver from Dell. We’ll try anything short of buying a new laptop or motherboard. I got this by going to the device manager and telling it to get the driver from Windows Update. By right-clicking and choosing playback devices same as going to Control Panel – Soundsit said that no audio devices were installed. Dell Inspiron Windows XP–there is no sound and no error messages.
Here is what I do by following the second step like you said: I no longer have the ability to use the modem or maybe it would work if I troubleshot a little further but since it has been years since I used a modem I didn’t bother trying.

I updated the touchpad driver via the device manager using the Dell driver and I installed Dell Quickset. Hey I’m having the exact same problem, the audio icon has a red circle with a white x in it and says “no audio input device is installed” i have a dell laptop and i had no problems with the aduio till a few days ago when my compter had some problems and i reloaded windows vista home premium 32bit and ever since the aduio hasn’t worked.
But, hey, Dell, does this mean your customers have a choice of a functioning modem or functioning audio, not both? If you’re running XP you can download the driver here: I too lost audio when I reinstalled Vista Premium.
Unfortunately if I like to the legacy driver it will redirect you to the AMD home page. Since it’s new, call Dell.
That’s exactly how I did it and worked for me I restarted the computer and everything was back to normal. I found out why. I did this and rebooted and no fix.
I download Sigma Tel audio driver and onspiron back with sound. Refer to the Service Manual when performing hardware upgrades. The only change with my problem is that it wasn’t the modem that I had to uninstall.
